The M1070 or Oshkosh HET is an American tank transporter manufactured by Oshkosh. In current operation, it is coupled with the M1000 DRS Technologies semitrailer in A0, A1 and M1300 configurations. The main purpose of this combination for the US Army is to transport the M1 Abrams tank. This combination replaced the earlier Oshkosh M911 tractor. In the M1300 version, it is designed for road use in Europe and works with a different trailer. The official name of the manufacturer is HET (Heavy Equipment Transporter). The HET A0 and HET A1 are adopted by the US Army under the M1070A0 and M1070A1 indices, respectively.
The fully enclosed cab accommodates the driver, one crew member and up to four passengers. The original cab met the requirements of the LTAS armor strategy and can utilize optional B-kit armor kits. For the M1070A1, a May 2013 Acquisition Decision Memorandum authorized the U.S. Army to develop and acquire armored replacement cabs for the M1070A1, leading to the creation of the HUSK. As of the end of 2020, HUSK was being produced by the Rock Island Arsenal-Joint Manufacturing & Technology Center; the number of participants was not disclosed.
The M1070 chassis has dimensions of 356×89×9.5 C-section and is made of SAE 1027 modified, heat-treated carbon manganese steel with a minimum yield strength of 758 MPa.
The original HET A0 is powered by a 12.06-liter Detroit Diesel 8V-92TA diesel engine that develops 500 hp at 2100 rpm and 1993 Nm of torque at 1200 rpm. It is mated to a five-speed Allison CLT-754 automatic transmission and a two-speed Oshkosh 55000 transfer case. The HET A1 is powered by a 700 hp Caterpillar C-18 six-cylinder diesel engine, which is mated to an upgraded Allison 4800SP seven-speed automatic transmission and an Oshkosh 30000 single-speed transfer case.
The M1000 has 40 wheels (215/75R 17.5 tires), which minimizes ground pressure and reduces the likelihood of the vehicle getting stuck. In addition, the tractor is equipped with a tire pressure control system, which makes it easier to overcome different road sections. The semitrailer is equipped with two hydraulic winches, each of which has a pulling force of 25 tons. The winches allow you to pull heavy equipment onto the platform, and with the help of many rings and carbines, it is firmly fixed to the M1000 platform.
The weight of the semitrailer is 22,882 kg. The payload, according to the manufacturer, is 70 tons at low speeds. Overall length 15.8 m, platform length 10.58 m, platform width 3.05 m, for the wide deck version – 3.66 m.
